FAQs

At what age can I start Driver Education?
Students must be 15 years, 9 months to apply for Driver Education.

What is the cost?
The cost of the course is $540. The full payment must accompany the application. Please make checks payable to Silver Lake Regional High School. Students must submit an additional fee of $15 to the instructor at completion of driving time (check MUST be made out to Mass DOT) to be certified by the RMV.

Instructors are available for extra road practice and Driver License Road tests at an additional cost.

What is the Parent Class?
This 2 hour class is required by the RMV for parents/guardians of all students under the age of 18. The purpose of the class is to inform parents/guardians about the content of the driver education curriculum, the Junior Operator's Law and the driving skills and behavior that their children will be learning in the program.

How do I get a Learner's Permit?
At 16 a student may go to the RMV and take both a Learner's Permit test and a vision test to obtain their Learner's Permit. The Learner's Permit test has 25 questions and students must get 18 questions correct to pass. The cost of the test is $30 and students must provide their original birth certificate and proof of Mass residency as well as their social security number.

What are the restriction for driving with a Learner's Permit?
During this phase:
  • You may only operate a passenger vehicle.
  • You must have a licensed driver 21 years old or older with you at all times.
  • You may not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless you are accompanied by your parent or guardian in the front seat next to you.
  • You may not drive outside of Massachusetts, if that state does not permit teens with out-of-state permits to operate a vehicle.
When can I obtain my Driver's License?
Students under the age of 18 must complete the entire Driver Education program and have their learner's permit for a minimum of 6 months before taking the RMV road test. Students must bring their learner's permit, along with proof of registration, insurance and vehicle inspection for the vehicle they'll be testing in to RMV. The road test fee is $35 and the licensing fee is $50.

What are the restrictions for driving with a Junior Operating License?
During this phase, you may now drive unsupervised during most hours; however, you will still need to abide by the following restrictions:
  • You are not allowed to drive between 12:00 a.m. and 5 a.m unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
  • For the first 6 months, you are not allowed to have any passengers younger than 18 years old, unless they are immediate family members.
  • You may not operate a vehicle while using a cell phone.
Once you turn 18 years old and have completed the steps mentioned above, all restrictions will be lifted and you'll be a fully-licensed Massachusetts driver. You must still carry your vertical license; after your 21st birthday you can renew your license, you will receive a standard horizontal driver's license.
